The Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16800 is a legendary vintage dive watch that holds a special place in Rolex history. Introduced in the late 1960s, the early reference 1680 was the first Submariner to feature a date complication, and by 1982, Rolex had refined this model with improved materials and subtle dial updates. Rolex improved upon the 1680 by releasing the Reference 16800. This Submariner was fitted with a uni-directional ratcheting bezel, a sapphire crystal with a lower profile than the crystal on the 1680, and a quick-set date function.
This 1987 example features a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, a black dial with tritium lume plots, and the classic Submariner Date layout with the Cyclops magnifier over the date window at 3 o’clock. The black aluminum bezel insert retains its vintage appeal with subtle aging over time. Inside, the watch is powered by the Rolex Caliber 3035, a reliable automatic movement with hacking seconds and a quick-set date. Paired with a stainless steel Oyster bracelet, the 16800 offers timeless tool-watch aesthetics that are highly coveted by vintage Rolex collectors.
Whether worn or collected, this Submariner Date 16800 is a piece of Rolex diving heritage.
