Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer 39mm 214720 (2019)

Originally introduced in 1953, the Rolex Explorer watch received its legendary name when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to summit Mount Everest. In celebration of their tremendous feat, Rolex released the Explorer: a watch made specifically for those with a life of adventure.
Since it’s production in 1953, we see a clear timeline of the Explorer, when Rolex moved from its early period of tool watches to the modern times of sports-luxury. The Explorer is a model that the company tested in hostile conditions and was made as a blueprint to develop the iconic Submariner and GMT models that would come after.
The Explorer is now the oldest Rolex sports watch model still in production today. While the company has released several Explorer references over the last seven decades, the watch’s design has remained remarkably consistent. The discontinued Explorer 214270 reference were produced with two distinct dial variations to consider, namely the Mark I and Mark II variants.

Mark I Dial: (2010 -2016) Timekeeping hands are shorter, the minute hand does not reach the minute track and the 3, 6 & 9 Arabic numerals are not coated in Chroma-light, so they do not glow blue under low light.
Mark II Dial: (2016 – 2021) Timekeeping hands are longer, the minute hand touches the minute track and the 3, 6 & 9 Arabic numerals have been filled with Chroma-light to ensure a uniform glow across the dial under low light.
