The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has a rich history that includes its association with motorsports, the watch’s design, and the name “Daytona”. In 1962, Rolex became the official timekeeper for the 24 Hours of Daytona race, an endurance event held at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. The Daytona Speedway is known as the birthplace of speed, and has hosted many land speed record-breaking events. The word “Daytona” is inscribed in red capital letters above the small seconds counter on the watch.
Made in 1969, this manually wound ‘pump pusher’ Cosmograph reference 6265 is an extremely rare and important Daytona.
This particular example is one of the icons, as it is one of the first-ever Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. Released at the same time as the Ref. 6241, the 6265 featured a stainless steel bezel as supposed to the 6241’s black acrylic bezel, a Pre-Oyster pump pusher case, and a beautiful three sub-dial layout. This particular example sports a classic Panda dial layout, with the other option at the time being a reverse panda as well.
While Daytonas do pop up, it is hard to find examples that are in excellent condition. The watch you see here today is certainly that, with a beautiful silver brushed dial with perfectly preserved lume plots. Details aside, on the wrist, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6265 is a joy to wear, with perfect proportions, and truly one of the ‘must-have’ pieces in watch collecting.
This important reference 6265 is powered by the manually-wound Valjoux Calibre 722-1 chronograph movement, evolved from the Calibre 72b & 722, and is fitted to a stamped “7835” folded link Oyster bracelet.
